Swagata Banerjee, the artistic director and founder of Moksha Academy of Odissi Dance is a firm believer of tradition. She establishes a distinctive ambiance of her deeply involved emotions and devotion, which portrays her enormous passion and perfection towards her art form. Her flexibility and postures are gifted and reflects the sculptures of the temples of Odisha.
Swagata made her initial foray into the dancing arena in her early childhood. She started her training at the tender age of four. Born into a rich cultural background, she grew up in an artistic environment that delicately nourished her creativity and brought out her innate interest in dance. Her mother Srilekha Bandyopadhyay, being a renowned vocalist has always been the biggest source of inspiration for her.
Swagata has a powerful and attractive stage presence with a delightful combination of versatility and spontaneity. With her immense potential, Swagata charms the audience with her beauty and grace. She has performed widely as a soloist in India and abroad. She represented India as a part of Guru Kakali Bose's dance ensemble in Mexico and Belize by the Indian government to showcase Indian culture. Her dance has the excellent blend of graceful movements and expressions.
Swagata's training in Odissi began under the guidance of Smt. Manimala Chakraborty. Then she was under the tutelage of Dr. Aditi Bandyopadhyay. For the past decade she is the disciple of the eminent dancer, Guru Rina Jana. Her twenty two years of rigorous training has eventually molded her into a graceful performer.
Swagata resides in Colorado, USA and performs regularly in different concerts. She has been invited for several lectures and demonstrations and has been honored by the universities for her impressive classical Odissi performances. She conducts Odissi workshops in different parts of USA to showcase Indian culture and tradition. Her goal is to reach out to people of various cultural backgrounds and teach them one of the oldest Indian Classical dance forms.
